About the region
Normandy is a geographical region corresponding to the former Duchy of Normandy. It is situated along the coast of France south of the English Channel between Brittany and Picardy and comprises territory in northern France and the Channel Islands.
Region areas
Once a very powerful duchy, today’s Normandy was split into two regions in 1956. The old duchy was broken into the Haute-Normandie(Upper Normandy) and Basse-Normandie(Lower Normandy) for easier administration.
Attractions
The attractions of Normandy mostly relate to its long tumultuous history. Beside the ones which relate in some way to William the Conqueror, there are a few which commemorate World War II.
Transportation
It is quite easy to get to anywhere in Normandy. There are a number of flights that not only serve major cities around Europe, but also the world. Inside the borders of France there is also the TGV which is a fast, but sometimes expensive way to travel.
Events
Norman traditions are on display each year. From the Easter festival in Deauville to the Mardi Gras in Granville, the old duchy is really a wonderful place to spend a vacation.
Restaurants & Nightlife
The regions of Normandy are very well known for their seafood specialties, which makes dining out one of the best experiences ever. The nightlife is also something, as it can get really crowded in bars and discos, especially in the weekend.
History & Civilisation
Normandy has been populated as early as prehistoric times. Its history is mostly about battle, starting with the subjugation of the Gauls by the Roman Empire and continuing with the barbarian raids, the Viking settlement in the region, the conquest of England, the Hundred Years War and of course World War II, in which Normandy played a crucial role in the victory of the Allied forces.
Caen Memorial – a trip through the past
While the purpose of the museum is to promote peace, doing so by presenting the horrors of war in picture and film, it is also an excellent place to learn about the causes and effects of the Second World War.
